Sunnyside Road Area Paving Project

This 22,000-ton roadway reconstruction project on one of the Clackamas area’s busiest stretches, consisted of a 4-inch grind and pave section between 122nd Avenue and 162nd Avenue on Sunnyside Road. The project was one of the most substantial urban paving projects completed in 2022. It was completed $500,000 under budget and all paving activities were completed before the deadline.

Utility adjustments were made between 122nd Avenue and 162nd Avenue, in addition to improved reflective pavement striping that was added along Sunnyside Road. There also were improvements made to turn lanes at intersections to minimize congestion and to help keep traffic flowing. To reduce the negative impact on the environment and to reduce carbon footprint, the project utilized an asphalt mix design with 20 percent recycled asphalt product.

There were a couple of project challenges, including high traffic counts and the tremendous amount of night work that was needed. This required the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Department to be on site whenever possible, to ensure no speeding or impaired drivers entered the work zone and caused damage or injury to the construction team. In addition, there were more than 200 utilities that the team had to deal with to ensure they were not impacted or damaged during construction.

Now complete, this highly traveled space of roadway provides Clackamas County visitors and residents a safer, smoother and more efficient driving surface.
