Janique Bacharach鈥檚 experience as a paralegal for 14 years laid a solid foundation for running a construction company, and she uses those skills every day. 鈥淭he baseline of construction work is contracting. I am still a legal professional working more broadly with contracts, compliance, commercial law, general business and HR concerns.鈥�

Her personal adventure of rehabbing a 20-acre farm in the Gorge enhanced her skill set. 鈥淚 like tactile endeavors that transform space and the community around it, building people who build things and seeing both raised up together. I love the elegance of the admin side and the raw grittiness of the building side.鈥�

Bacharach鈥檚 business strategy led to her company鈥檚 first million-dollar contract in 2021 and it received its first government job 鈥� a $1.1 million contract 鈥� in 2022. She has doubled her office team and her field crew self-performs an average of 50 percent of its contracts in addition to collaborating with more than three dozen subcontractors.

Bacharach Construction has hired its first female and LGBTQ-identifying field crew member. It also recently hired its first candidate from Portland YouthBuilders after volunteering to participate in mock interviews to help students hone their business skills. The company is supporting a field crew member鈥檚 apprenticeship through Northwest College of Construction.

Bacharach encouraged people to shed light on the mental and emotional labor of business. 鈥淪kills trainings often landlock and displace our inner terrain, but internal skills aren鈥檛 personal to therapy, they鈥檙e professional keys to effective workers. As we build psychological safety into the dark spaces between beginning, becoming and being, we will best build the people who build.鈥�
