Kathleen Stuart spent over a decade in political work, specifically in campaign strategy. 鈥淚 knew I wanted to support changemakers even more directly on the frontlines, and, like so many working mothers, I also knew that I wanted to be able to shape my schedule around and for my family.鈥�

She started Stuart Collective in 2017 and has grown her team to nine people. This year, she led the emergency communications strategy to build momentum for the cap-and-trade bill. Stuart connected the organization spearheading the bill directly to the governor鈥檚 team and, less than 14 days later, the bill became law.

In partnership with the Coalition for the Common Good, she crafted the Student Success Act. Passed in 2019, the bill provides more than $2 billion in funding for Oregon schools and ensures that students have access to quality education from kindergarten to college.

鈥淜athleen sets the bar high and instills in her teams the agency they need to make big changes for this state,鈥� said Caitlin Copple with Full Swing Public Relations. 鈥淪he motivates her team by thinking about how to get the work done, rather than dwelling on all the possible reasons why they may not be able to overcome a challenge. This mindset ignites innovation and inspires collaboration among those that she works with.鈥�

Stuart partnered with the leaders of Pinero y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste and coalition leaders to overturn the exemption of overtime pay for Oregon farmworkers. In 2022, Oregon passed HB 4002, becoming the fourth state to guarantee farmworker overtime.

鈥淢y work allows me to feed my love of collaboration, creating teams that tackle big, complex problems and elevating new leaders in the process. I consider myself a problem-solver by nature and find great joy in taking on challenges that face seemingly insurmountable odds,鈥� Stuart said.
