Shelly Alexander joined DEA fresh out of college with a fascination about how people and goods flow to their destinations, as well as how her movements have an impact. Now, more than 20 years later, she is also filled with appreciation for the people she works with.

鈥淵ou have to love what you do and where you鈥檙e doing it,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 love working with our junior staff, sharing what I know and the pitfalls I鈥檝e had along the way. I love seeing them do a quality project and gradually letting go of the reins as they progress.鈥�

Her accomplishments include the I-5 Aurora-Donald Interchange Project in Marion County. Just the second diverging diamond interchange in Oregon, her innovative solutions and strategic leadership on this complex project will result in improved safety and mobility for all users.

As part of the owner鈥檚 representative team for the I-5/Rose Quarter Improvement Project in Portland, Alexander is the traffic lead. She is responsible for coordinating challenging design elements, balancing public needs for additional capacity and re-establishing connections within the Albina community.

鈥淭hroughout her career, Shelly has consistently taken on challenging projects that push the boundaries of innovation and benefit society. Her numerous accomplishments, especially her work on recent and complex projects, highlight her exceptional skills as a project manager and her commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure,鈥� said Gavin Oien, DEA鈥檚 vice president and Oregon market leader, Transportation Business Unit.

For more than a decade, Alexander volunteered at Abernathy Elementary School, where she introduced hands-on engineering projects to students. As a member of WTS, she helps to advance women in the transportation industry by fostering their involvement in STEM education.

鈥淚 think awareness and advocacy working in tandem are really powerful, and I look forward to seeing what the next generation of women accomplish,鈥� she said.
