carpenter journeyman lead for Mortenson

Ashley Johnson started working in construction to earn money for school and discovered that not only did she like the paycheck, she also really enjoyed the work. 鈥淚 like that it鈥檚 basically large-scale arts and crafts and it鈥檚 always changing so you don鈥檛 get bored,鈥� she said.

Since joining the Mortenson field team five years ago, she has worked on more than 10 different projects in Portland and Southwest Washington. These include Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center, Hyatt Centric, Providence Health Center at Reed鈥檚 Crossing, and the Bonneville Power Administration鈥檚 Technical Services building.

After spending the entirety of her apprenticeship with Mortenson, Johnson moved into the role of lead carpenter journeyperson. Dalton Gensch, senior safety manager, said she consistently challenges the narrative of how things have been done and pushes her team to improve processes.

鈥淣ot only has this challenged our team to work smarter and more efficiently, she has gotten others to understand the benefit of change and innovation, fostering a better working environment for our team,鈥� Gensch said.

Johnson received a Choice Award for safety by Mortenson team members for her leadership in training field team members. As these awards are given by colleagues, Johnson鈥檚 win highlights the true value and contribution she brings to the team and how much they are appreciated.

A member of Oregon Tradeswomen, Johnson was part of the leadership panel held at Mortenson during Women in Construction Week, providing insight to women interested in a career in the trades. Her mentorship and leadership go beyond technical expertise and extend to fostering an inclusive work environment where team members feel valued and accepted.

鈥淎shley has helped other female carpenters to gain skills, while supporting them and giving them a familiar face that they are always able to ask for help,鈥� Gensch said.
