When Jodie Inman was named the Portland Water Bureau鈥檚 chief engineer in 2021, she was only the second woman to ever hold this position. She brought more than 25 years of experience in the private and public sectors, and began working in public water utilities in 2008.

鈥淚 love the opportunity to be part of a bigger mission 鈥� delivering safe drinking water every minute of every day. What I, and we do, matters. The decisions and actions we take are part of supporting our economy and our friends and neighbors,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 also love being able to work with such a strong team, both at the water bureau and the city, who are passionate about finding solutions, working collaboratively and serving our public.鈥�

Under Inman鈥檚 leadership, the water bureau got involved in PBOT鈥檚 Vision Zero Transportation Safety projects, a city-wide housing crisis and working with private developers on new development. She also is a member of the Fair Contracting Forum that seeks to increase diversity in procurement and contracting.

Inman takes part in classroom presentations for Portland State University鈥檚 Portland Quarterly every semester. She participated in college and job fairs to recruit and encourage more people to choose public service as a career. Inman has led a classroom experiment with fourth graders on water filtration to spur interest in the field of science and water quality among youth.

鈥淛odie collaborates with other chief engineers in PBOT and Environmental Services as well as other leaders to share, understand and problem-solve together 鈥� to collaborate to lay the groundwork for doing good work, the public鈥檚 work. She works to dismantle silos and foster an environment of collaboration,鈥� said Shelli Romero, Oregon Department of Transportation area manager.

Inman served on the Tigard Planning Commission for eight years and chaired it for six of them.
