Susan Barnes

principal and director of architecture at Skylab Architecture

Susan Barnes gained experience at Allied Works Architecture and Hacker Architects before joining Skylab in 2012. She was named a principal in 2021.

Barnes was the project lead for the Serena Williams Building, the largest building at Nike鈥檚 World Headquarters in Beaverton. Over a six-year duration, she led all phases of the project鈥檚 design, documentation and construction.

After the Serena Williams Building, Barnes focused her efforts on growing Skylab鈥檚 residential scope of work as the director of residential architecture. Skylab has a rich history of residential projects, but under Barnes鈥� leadership over the past three years the number of single-family houses has grown significantly.

鈥淚鈥檝e had the privilege of working with Susan for the last 15 years,鈥� said Robin Wilcox, also a Skylab principal. 鈥淎s project architect, her talent, organizational skills and tenacious work ethic were evident right away. But what set her apart was her thoughtfulness, compassion and sense of humor. In a profession that can demand long hours and be high stress, working with Susan is fun.鈥�

Throughout her career Barnes has remained engaged with architectural education. At the Portland State University School of Architecture, she鈥檚 been a regular studio reviewer, participated in student portfolio reviews, and recently presented an overview of the Serena Willams Building.

Barnes also is a leader in Skylab鈥檚 mentoring programs. She leads the technical training of all staff, running tech talks, teaching design and documentation standards, and moderating discussions on design process. She has established the deliverables for all phases of design within the office and is actively engaged in the QA/QC of work to be issued.

As one of Skylab鈥檚 longest tenured employees, Barnes also is a representative of institutional knowledge, able to guide colleagues to past projects or illustrate how similar challenges have been taken on in the past.
