Carissa Mylin is a visionary that loves using design to enhance the lives of the people she works with.

鈥淚 have drawn inspiration from different people throughout my career, but mostly what motivates me are the people who I get to design space for,鈥� she shared. 鈥淢ost of our lives revolve around interacting with the built environment, so I hope to make that experience exceptional, safe, healthy, and good for the natural environment.鈥�

As a principal of SERA Architects, she has had the chance to work on many notable projects, but one of her most significant contributions was serving as the lead designer of SERA鈥檚 new Portland headquarters. Because of her efforts, the space incorporates an equitable approach to natural light, flexible workstations, biophilic elements, and quiet areas. Mylin is the youngest member of SERA leadership and loves to mentor, empower, and connect with young professionals.

鈥淐arissa鈥檚 thoughtfulness for her colleagues in terms of design has had a ripple effect, influencing how the workplace functions on a daily basis,鈥� shared SERA鈥檚 Meredith Floyd-Preston in Mylin鈥檚 Women of Vision nomination letter. 鈥淪he collaborates, mentors, and uses her position of leadership in the firm to lift employees and give them opportunities to grow.鈥�

When asked what advice she has for others at the infant stages of their careers, Mylin emphasizes the importance of relationships.

鈥淭hroughout your entire career, there is going to be a room full of people deciding whether you鈥檙e going to get hired, what projects you will or won鈥檛 get to work on, whether you鈥檒l get a promotion. And you鈥檙e not going to be in that room, so it鈥檚 important that you have someone who knows who you are, what you want to do, what you鈥檙e good at and is willing to advocate for you,鈥� she said. 鈥淒on鈥檛 underestimate your power and ability to initiate and impact change.鈥�
