The emergency department in Oregon Health & Science University鈥檚 Mark O. Hatfield Research Center is undergoing a remodel.

The research center is at 3250 SW Sam Jackson Park Road. The emergency department, on the eighth floor, is expanding from approximately 21,150 square feet to 33,700 square feet.

The project team includes architect PKA Architects, civil and structural engineer KPFF, and general contractor Turner Construction.

OHSU is seeking separation of the adult emergency department from the pediatric emergency department. This will improve safety for patients and staff as well as increase the facility鈥檚 capacity for both adult and pediatric patients, OHSU spokesperson Erik Robinson stated in an email. Creation of a dedicated pediatric entry is a critical upgrade that will enhance the experience for children and families, he added.

鈥淓ven though OHSU will expand its overall hospital capacity with the opening of Vista Pavilion聽next spring, OHSU鈥檚 emergency department is the entry point for many people to the hospital and remains far beyond capacity with many patients being treated in hallways, waiting rooms and spaces such as a temporary surge space created outside an auditorium adjacent to the emergency department,鈥� Robinson stated.

When completed, the emergency department鈥檚 capacity will increase by 17 beds.

In June, the OHSU board of directors approved a budget of $55 million for the multiphase project. Construction began on July 7 and is expected to finish in 2028.
