Lease Crutcher Lewis and JRJ Architects have completed a 57,250-square-foot renovation and expansion of the emergency department at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, in-creasing treatment capacity and introducing a new patient care delivery model while keeping the department fully operational throughout construction.

The multi-phased project, completed in May 2025, expanded the emergency department in the Phil & Penny Knight Pavilion from 58 to 84 treatment spaces.

The redesigned lobby is bright and welcoming, and a new arrival zone promotes rapid triage and care initiation. The redesigned ambulance bay improves caregiver access to incoming patients and centralized nursing stations allow for faster response times and more efficient coordination of care. A dedicated results-pending room delivers diagnostic outcomes out-side of primary care treatment spaces, freeing beds for more acute cases. A private consultation room supports sensitive conversations with families.

The relocation and expansion of a secure Behavioral Health unit provides safer and more appropriate environments for patients experiencing mental health crises. Twelve flexible treatment rooms can adjust to meet the age or clinical needs of any patient, supporting both medical and behavioral health.

A resuscitation room adjacent to CT scanners accelerate stroke diagnosis and treatment.

A central component of the project was the construction of a new, dedicated diagnostic imaging department featuring three general radiology machines, two CT scanners and an ultrasound room. Lewis engineered structural bracing and coordinated mechanical, electrical and vibration requirements to support sensitive imaging equipment while adjacent clinical areas remained open.

Construction proceeded in four phases over 26 months, with short-interval scheduling used to define work zones, manage shutdown windows and ensure there were exam rooms available at all times. The team applied a progressive occupancy approach under a single permit, allowing Providence to occupy and begin using completed spaces before the overall project reached final completion. Real-time as-built documentation was delivered digitally at each phase turnover.

Zero patient diversions occurred during the entire construction period.
