A new 19,000-square-foot fire station serving the rapidly developing South Hillsboro and Reeds Crossing communities opened in December 2025, bringing together fire, police, and emergency operations functions under one roof for the first time in the city鈥檚 history.
South Hillsboro Fire and Rescue Station 9, located at 6830 S.E. Butternut Creek Parkway, was built by INLINE Construction and designed by Rice Fergus Miller. The facility houses three apparatus bays, 10 bunk rooms, a fitness center, a Battalion Chief鈥檚 quarters, and administrative spaces shared by multiple city departments, including a Disaster Operations Center, a police office, and disaster supply storage.
The station is designed to operate independently for approximately three weeks during a major disaster, supported by a 1,000-gallon generator fed by a 10,000-gallon diesel tank. A 1,000-foot backup water well 鈥 drilled an additional 300 feet beyond initial estimates after geological conditions proved more challenging than anticipated 鈥 provides water resiliency for both the station and the broader City of Hillsboro water system.
Jeff Gurske, deputy chief of the City of Hillsboro Fire and Rescue Department, said in the Top Projects submission form that the contractor鈥檚 approach set the project apart. 鈥淭hrough strategic and appropriate value engineering, INLINE has saved the project thou-sands of dollars without compromising quality or functionality,鈥 Gurske noted.
Among the project鈥檚 notable construction innovations was the use of cross-laminated timber roof decking in the apparatus bay. To avoid surface-mounted conduits on the exposed CLT ceiling, the electrical team routed conduit through the roof鈥檚 insulation layer and used hexagonal junction boxes fitted into pre-drilled panel holes 鈥 producing what the project team described as the cleanest apparatus bay ceiling installation in the state.
The exterior incorporates Shou Sugi Ban siding, a Japanese wood-charring technique that creates weather resistance without chemical preservatives. A solar array and low-carbon concrete for all site flatwork further supported the City of Hillsboro鈥檚 sustainability goals.
A fueling station on site includes two 10,000-gallon tanks 鈥 one gasoline, one diesel 鈥 available to all city fleet vehicles, including police. Multiple EV charging stations were in-stalled in both the secured staff lot and the public parking field.
Jobsite safety was managed through daily five-minute safety huddles, pre-task planning sessions before critical operations, and the use of 360-degree cameras and OpenSpace software to monitor high-risk work weekly. MatterPort 3D imaging gave the design team re-mote, real-time visibility of site conditions throughout construction.
Minority and small business firms contributed to the project, including WFJ Janitorial, Sign Wizards and Northwest Waterproofing.
