Hoffman Construction has completed a sweeping renovation for its new headquarters at 5500 Meadows Road, transforming a former tech company office into a 42,000-square-foot showcase of construction craft that the firm says reflects its culture as it enters its second century of operation.
Designed by Portland-based Skylab Architecture and built by Hoffman鈥檚 Precision Construction division, the two-level workplace was completed in January 2025 after roughly 12 months from concept to occupancy. The existing interior was demolished down to the structure, with stairs, core elements, finishes and building systems all removed before reconstruction began.
The design organizes the floor plate as an urban plan in miniature. Two circulation spines 鈥 dubbed 鈥淭he Boulevard鈥 running east-west and 鈥淭he Park Blocks鈥 running north-south 鈥 connect departments conceived as distinct neighborhoods, turning what had been a maze-like layout into a light-filled environment intended to encourage collaboration.
Among the project鈥檚 most technically ambitious elements is a suspended concrete stair engineered using vertically hung rebar and couplers typically employed in high-rise construction. Each tread was individually formed and poured on-site. A custom laminated veneer lumber (LVL) fa莽ade system, normally used as structural framing, was veneered and deployed rhythmically along interior corridors. The boardroom enclosure incorporates switch glass technology, allowing instant privacy from the reception area when activated. Tunable circadian lighting systems adjust color temperature throughout the day to support occupant wellness. Custom fabricator SkylabSHOP produced a polished aluminum pendant light fixture shaped in the profile of Hoffman鈥檚 鈥淗鈥 logo.
The project prioritized human-centered design strategies that support employee well-being, equity and connection. Workstations and offices are arranged to maximize equal access to daylight and views. Community kitchens, lounges and open gathering areas are located along major circulation routes to foster spontaneous interaction between teams.
The accelerated schedule required demolition to proceed while construction documents were still being finalized, with permitting, fabrication and construction occurring simultaneously. Crews frequently worked overnight shifts while designers and fabricators resolved details in real time.
Safety considerations were embedded throughout construction, with rigorous coordination among subcontractors working overlapping shifts. The completed office also incorporates a dedicated 鈥渕oment room鈥 drawn from Hoffman鈥檚 GUTS wellness program, originally developed to support mental health and stress management on job sites. Concrete floors were ground and sealed rather than covered, and structural materials were left exposed, reducing material waste and creating a durable interior.
