Washington High School soon to sell; to be converted into housing
Developer Art Demuro, president of Venerable Properties, is planning to convert the vacant Washington High School building in Southeast Portland's Buckman neighborhood into multifamily housing. Portland Public Schools and Venerable Properties have reached a tentative agreement for a $2 million sale of the 1924-built school.
Historic Preservation League names big industry players to its board
The Historic Preservation League of Oregon announced five new members who will serve on its board of directors. In an effort to revitalize the 35-year-old nonprofit, three new seats were added to the board, which now has 12 members.
Target finalizing lease for downtown Portland store
Target is finalizing its lease agreement to open a store in downtown Portland, according to sources close to the deal. The Historic Landmarks Commission on Oct. 10 unanimously approved alterations to the Galleria Building, which occupies the entire city block bounded by Southwest Morrison and Alder streets and Southwest Ninth and 10th avenues.
3 firms interested in redevelopment of Centennial Mills
After ending years of negotiations with Lab Holdings in late June, the Portland Development Commission has identified three other firms interested in potentially redeveloping the Centennial Mills site in Northwest Portland.
White Stag Block receives national recognition
Venerable Group's redeveloped White Stag Block in Old Town Chinatown is one of 23 projects that will be honored at the National Preservation Awards ceremony in Austin, Texas on Oct. 29. The award will be presented to Art DeMuro, president of Venerable Group.
Post recession, developers preach caution
Portland developers are emerging from the recession with a new philosophy on how they should do business. Most agree the downturn has taught them the importance of conservativeness and thorough planning.
