The University of Oregon’s newest Portland campus has received the Preservation Honor Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Venerable Group’s redeveloped White Stag Block in Old Town Chinatown is one of 23 projects that will be honored at the National Preservation Awards ceremony in Austin, Texas on Oct. 29. The award will be presented to Art DeMuro, president of Venerable Group.

The $37-million renovation took three buildings constructed in 1883, 1889 and 1907 and connected them into one 137,000-square-foot structure now being used as UO‘s main Portland campus. In addition to preserving the historic character of the buildings, high-performance windows and the installation of efficient heating and cooling systems with occupancy sensors helped the project earn a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification

“I have been a member of the National Trust for a long time,” DeMuro said. “I consider this to be one of the top awards in the industry. I’m really gratified.”

Co-recipients of the award include Wendy Larson of the University of Oregon, Hal Ayotte of Fletcher Farr Ayotte Architects, Omid Nabipoor of Interface Engineer, Brent Parry of Bremik Construction, Blake Patsy of KPFF Consulting Engineers and Ralph DiNola of Green Building Services.
