Two proposals stand out for Memorial Coliseum

The city of Portland received approximately 80 proposals to redevelop Memorial Coliseum; close to 30 came in on the Jan. 8 deadline date. While the proposals range from detailed to whimsical, the Daily Journal of Commerce focuses on two: Douglas Obletz's Memorial Athletic & Recreation Center and Portland Trail Blazers' and Portland Winterhawks' Jumptown mixed-use district.

New group proposes Coliseum community center

A new development group has proposed renovating the Veterans Memorial Coliseum into a community center. The renovation would come with a name change - the Veterans Memorial Arts and Athletics Center (VMAAC). It would include a revamped war memorial, a jazz club, water features and reflecting pools. Other areas of the Coliseum would house educational and multimedia facilities.

City reaches out to public online

If left to the online masses, a redeveloped Memorial Coliseum would be used for games of hide and seek and capture the flag, or repurposed as an indoor water park. Those are some of the ideas submitted to Mayor Sam Adams’ office, which is asking for ideas for the redevelopment project, and gauging public reaction to it in real time, via online social networks.
