Rich Hotel renovation team strikes compromise with city, avoids full seismic upgrade
The Rich Hotel building, constructed in 1905 in Portland's Old Town, was recently purchased by Innovative Housing, Inc., an affordable housing developer that plans on converting the former hotel rooms to efficiency studio apartments. The the developer is working trying to make a plan that won't trigger a code-mandated seismic upgrade.

Longtime home, business of Chinese matriarch for sale
The building at 221 N.W. Third Ave. now belongs to May Oka, one of the eight children of Kai Young Wong, who immigrated to Portland in 1924. The building has been vacant since 1975, and now Oka is ready to sell it. A broker has not been hired to represent the property, but Oka is seeking $695,000 for it.
Warehouse in Old Town for sale
The building, at 320 N.W. Hoyt St., is 21,900 square feet over three levels, and is being pitched for adaptive reuse or a land investment. The ownership, an investment group with ties to Alaskan Copper Cos. in Seattle, does not wish to disclose an asking price for the building, but says it is targeting a sale price above the $2.27 million market value. The Broadway Recovery Center is set to open in November as a three-story mental health clinic. It was designed and constructed to hold and additional eight stories in the future so that maximum density could be achieved at the downtown site.
Uwajimaya pulls out of long-anticipated Old Town project
Property owner David Gold and project developer Sockeye Development announced Monday morning that Seattle-based Asian grocer Uwajimaya no longer plans to anchor a nearly $80 million mixed-use project that had been in the works for years. Gold said that moving forward with a Block 33 project would be difficult now.
