‘Lost generation’ of architects still here
Local architecture firm principals, school officials and students agree that the current recession has forced many recent graduates to seek work outside of the field. The situation harkens back to the recession of the 1980s, when the so called "lost generation" of architects struggled to find work. But some also say that concept 鈥� both then and now 鈥� may be exaggerated.

The Schweiger Memorial Scholarship Fund, an annual scholarship program formed by Advanced American Construction, will reward $37,000 in scholarships to 13 students from Oregon and Washington at an April 20 ceremony at the Governor Hotel.

Six real estate students at Portland State University were charged with identifying the highest and best use for a 16-acre plot of land The Standard owns in Hillsboro. The students' proposal included an entertainment destination anchored by a large movie theater and sports bar arcade, with housing, a hotel, commercial retail and restaurant space.

A 2011 Oregon bill opened the door for secondary schools to initiate programs for career and technical education, but money was held because of the state's budget crunch.
Carousel, museum being built by volunteers in Albany
Albany City Council has allocated $110,000 in urban renewal money to support a project that calls for creation of a carousel, museum, arcade and food building. A drive unit manufactured in 1909 will power the carousel, which will feature horses and other animals carved and painted by hand by local volunteers.
Scholarships available for DMWESB firms from Northwest College of Construction
The Northwest College of Construction recently announced a new scholarship fund to provide training for registered disadvantaged/minority/women-owned and emerging small businesses and their employees in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
The Bermuda Triangle of dorms could spell opportunity in Portland
The upcoming College Station building (read an in-depth story here) will add 978 beds to Portland State's on-campus population. It also means there will be three dorms in as many blocks.
