A mixed-use building in Portland’s Lloyd District, constructed in the 1950s as the Broadway Motel, has undergone a needed renovation.

The 15,000-square-foot 2100 Broadway Building at the corner of Northeast Broadway and 21st Avenue now has ground-level retail space along with office space on the second and third floors.

According to property owner Richard Larson of City Houses Inc., left, one of the most eye-catching features of the structure is an open atrium covered by a retractable skylight.

Even with the extensive remodel, the building retained a geothermal heating-and-cooling system that was installed more than a quarter of a century ago. The system consists of a 300-foot-deep well and a series of pumps and cisterns in which heat or cold is extracted from the water and transmitted to each of the building’s spaces.
