According to a recent study by MIT, wind turbines at the Shepard’s Flat wind farm project site could affect radar performance at a Department of Defense-owned radar facility near Arlington. But so could birds, rain, and traffic from nearby roadways.

was prompted in March when the Federal Aviation Administration issued a notice of presumed hazard to Shepard’s Flat developer Caithness saying that their planned wind farm could interfere with the radar system.

The study found that ‘false targets’ such as turbines, birds and cars can be reduced by updating the radar technology at the site, an action the Department of Defense has already agreed to pursue.
