Jumping into a new beat as a reporter reminds me of when my wife asked me about the series finale of the television show “Lost.” Having only seen the first two seasons of the show, she asked, “So what happened, how did it end?”

Even if you鈥檝e never seen “Lost,” I鈥檓 sure you鈥檙e familiar with its reputation of having a plot which twists more than Chubby Checker. So answering my wife鈥檚 question was nearly impossible, but I tried to answer. In order to tell her how it ended, I basically had to start at the beginning of the series, which is what I have to do as a reporter new to the transportation beat.

In order to get a better understanding of some of the bigger issues, like the Portland-Milwaukie light rail project, the Sellwood Bridge, and the Columbia River Crossing, I鈥檝e had to go back to the beginning. I鈥檓 essentially watching a whole series in just a few weeks and I was surprised to find many of the projects make “Lost” look like the most straight-forward television show of all time.

But these projects are still a long ways away from reaching their finales, and now that I鈥檓 all caught up, or nearly caught up, I鈥檓 looking forward to seeing how it all goes down.
