When I was traveling through Nevada a few weeks ago, I was struck by the large number of -powered devices there. From solar-powered rest-area lighting to solar-powered parking meters, I was impressed with how many applications the state found for solar panels.

True, Nevada gets about a billion times more sun in a day than we here in Oregon get in a summer. But there’s no reason we shouldn’t take advantage of the sun to its fullest when it’s out. Here’s a roundup of some cool applications of solar panels:

An off-grid charger that carries your essentials while charging your cell phone, music player and digital camera in-transit.

If your building isn’t solar-compatible, the carports in your parking lot might be.

I’m surprised we don’t have these already, considering a streetlight just sits around all day. Danish designers have developed the Sun Flower, which lights up streets with the power of the sun.
