Few architecture firms produce more head-scratching and jaw-dropping designs than Heatherwick Studio, headed by Thomas Heatherwick and based in London. Heatherwick’s firm creates bio-inspired structures and are intended to make the world more beautiful. Often, the architecture looks more like sculpture, like art.

Heatherwick said he tries to gives buildings “soul.” He said small items, like earrings, often have soul, but buildings do not.

At this year’s TED Conference, Heatherwick introduced some of his latest work, including the 鈥淪eed Cathedral鈥� for the U.K. Pavilion at last year’s Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.
