A new synthetic soccer field at the Chapman School in Northwest Portland had its groundbreaking on Wednesday, and representatives from the Portland Timbers, Adidas and the city of Portland were there to .

The money is part of a community fundraising effort called , and it should round out the field’s $250,000 price tag. The check was presented to players of the Hillside Soccer Club.

The field will be named Steve Brand Field in memory of a Chapman School teacher who passed away from cancer in December. The field should be completed in September. The contractor is Benchmark Construction.

The field will be used by the school for recess and physical education classes and as the Hillside Soccer Club’s home field. The field will also be used by Lincoln Little League Baseball and by the people who gather around a Chapman School chimney every September during the annual swift migration.

The field is being essentially donated to the school, but the Portland Public School district put it through its planning process and gave it the necessary guidelines and permits.

鈥淲e’re always appreciative when people go to bat for us and help us out with facilities,鈥� said Randy Miller, assistant director of facilities for Portland Public Schools. 鈥淭here is never enough money, and for those kinds of projects that wouldn’t ordinarily get done 鈥� you know we have a lot of other things to do inside the buildings 鈥� those kinds of things are greatly appreciated.鈥�

Last week, the Timbers and Adidas donated $20,000 to a new field at James John Elementary School in North Portland. The Timbers have donated a combined $50,000 to Portland-area soccer fields this year.
