I love mid-century modern . I mean, have you seen ? Gorgeous.

But I’m not alone.

In fact, houses designed and constructed in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s are apparently quite “trendy” right now. An architectural historian I interviewed for a story on East Portland’s abundance of mid-century modern homes told me that, these days, it is “a hipster thing” to like this style.

Alyssa Starelli, a real estate agent who specializes in the era, confirms this conjecture. Starelli’s and garb are appropriate for the era. She is among a group of enthusiasts who have turned their affinity into an organization: The Mid-Century Modern League.

This summer, the MCM League is hosting the most appropriate of themed parties to celebrate their passion: their first annual Mad Men Company Picnic. The event is open to the public, and will include, among other things:

  • croquet and bowling
  • a cake walk
  • swing dance lessons
  • tours of vintage Airstream trailers

It’s unclear whether the event will include other aspects familiar in the Mad Men TV show, like , glorified drunk driving and infidelity.

Regardless, wear your best retro garb and join the architecture hipsters at the Mad Men party. It should be a great time!

Stats: Sunday, August 21: 2 p.m. to “late”; Mad Men Picnic @ Milwaukie Elk’s Lodge, 13121 S.E. McLoughlin Blvd; $8 general admission, kids free, $5 for MCM League or Elk’s members (additional cost for bowling, BBQ and liquor); More info on .
