TriMet releases ‘close call’ videos of people crossing tracks

TriMet on Monday released its 鈥渃lose call鈥� videos of dumb pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the tracks just in front of accelerating WES trains.

They’re mildly entertaining and I have to admit the first one pulled an involuntary, 鈥淗ah!鈥� from my mouth as the pedestrian narrowly escaped being violently run over.

WES trains weigh about 80 tons, and at 55 miles per hour, they take half a mile to come to a complete stop. Considering they take five seconds to blow by at the stop, I can’t figure out why someone would need to beat it to the cross walk. But they do, and according to TriMet, 420 people were killed in railroad “trespassing” accidents last year in the U.S.

To try and curb the behavior, TriMet has released videos as part of its summer safety campaign. Here’s one:
