Like many teens, Cody Hoesly didn鈥檛 spend too much time pondering world events. Time spent studying in Germany during college opened his eyes to what was happening outside his own life, however.

鈥淚 started reading the newspaper and got interested in current events, politics and policy, and that got me interested in going to law school,鈥� he said.

Hoesly had grown up in Portland and earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in German studies and business-economics from Lewis & Clark College in 2002. He decided to go to law school at the University of California, Berkeley, for a change of scenery, and received his law degree in 2005.

As a clerk at the Oregon Tax Court and for Oregon Supreme Court Justice Rives Kistler, Hoesly had the opportunity to experience a variety of cases. He knew he wanted to be a litigator and he had become interested in commercial and property litigation during law school. Now, as an associate with Larkins Vacura, Hoesly specializes in business, banking and appellate litigation.

鈥淚 had the misfortune of having Cody appear on the other side of one of my mortgage cases recently,鈥� said attorney Phil Goldsmith. 鈥淭his was a misfortune in the sense that Cody鈥檚 written and oral advocacy resulted in an early case ruling significantly in his client鈥檚 favor and contrary to my clients. Otherwise, it has been a pleasure dealing with him in that capacity as well.鈥�

Goldsmith is a fellow member of the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association鈥檚 amicus committee, which Hoesly co-chairs and has volunteered his time and expertise to file several successful amicus curiae briefs in Oregon鈥檚 appellate courts. Hoesly also provides pro bono services to the American Civil Liberties Union. Among his cases, he successfully urged the Corvallis School District not to expand its use of drug-sniffing dogs to search school lockers and vehicles. 鈥� Melody Finnemore

What was your least favorite law school course (and why)?

One that stands out was property class. The teacher was good and I thought I got it, but when the grades came out I fell into the middle of the pack.

What song is on heavy rotation on your iPod?

I don鈥檛 have an iPod, but I like Neil Young and The Who.

What was your first car (year, make, model, 鈥渘ickname鈥�)?

It was a four-door Geo Metro that was eggshell white. I called it 鈥淭he Beast鈥� because it was the least beastly car possible. We did manage to pack nine kids into it, though.

Which words or phrases do you overuse?

I probably say 鈥渓ike鈥� and 鈥測ou know鈥� too much.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise most people.

I have an identical twin brother named Dusty who lives in Santa Barbara. When he visits Portland, I have to tell people not to be offended if they see me and I don鈥檛 say 鈥渉i鈥� or act like I know them because it鈥檚 not really me.
