If you look across Portland’s skyline, Andersen Construction probably had a hand in making it. The company has been around since the 1950s and in recent years has built notable fixtures such as the Cosmopolitan on the Park, Vista Pearl and Yard.

Now, the general contractor is taking on the Alamo Manhattan Blocks in the South Waterfront District. The first development there, Block 40, an eight-story apartment building, will wrap up in December, but the stars of the show are still to come. Ground recently was broken on Block 41, a 21-story (almost 500,000 square feet) apartment tower, and Block 42, a 225-unit mid-rise apartment building. At the peak of construction, the four-block site will be occupied by upwards of 450 to 500 workers.

While the high-rises might gain Andersen Construction more attention, its work extends beyond the clouds. The general contractor is working on a $260 million, 380,000-square-foot addition to the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford and just wrapped up a 330,000-square-foot expansion at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in North Portland. The firm also recently broke ground on the $230 million Benson Polytechnic High School modernization. As a highly ambitious project for Portland Public Schools, Vice President Brian Knudsen said it stands out for Andersen Construction right now. Work will entail not only updating the century-old building, but also preserving its historical elements.
