Skanska USA Building has tackled some huge East Coast projects, including LaGuardia Airport鈥檚 $60 billion redevelopment in Queens, New York City, and the 2.2 million-square-foot MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. On the West Coast, the firm鈥檚 Portland office is tackling some sizable projects too. In the last year and a half, the Swedish-based general contractor wrapped up a $215 million, 830-foot-long extension of Portland International Airport鈥檚 Terminal E and the new 353,000-square-foot Sherwood High School 鈥� now the largest high school in Oregon.

These days, the general contractor is building an $88.9 million, 386,000-square-foot data center for Flexential in Hillsboro. Roughly 130 crew members are on the project site daily working to create one building 鈥� one phase at a time. Skanska USA Building General Manager Tim Johnson said the challenge has been dealing with material availability, an industry-wide dilemma. After each section of the data center is complete, it鈥檚 turned over to the owners, meaning a 鈥渕assive鈥� amount of electrical has to go inside in a short time frame, he added.

In Vancouver, Washington, the contractor has so far avoided possible material-related delays while erecting the new $156.6 million Mountain View High School building. All critical materials that could have become an issue were purchased early, Johnson said. As a result, construction of the 276,000-square-foot facility is on track to finish by next summer.
