ACE Mentor Program needs event sponsors

The ACE Mentor Program of Oregon has all of the pieces for the group's 2011 annual fundraising event: the venue, the day and time, and even the guest speaker. There's just one detail still to be ironed out - event sponsors.

Until the industry rebounds, students are recommended to go to community colleges and take math classes or pursue associate degrees to improve employability. Students can also take jobs in something related to their area of interest.

Remember when shop classes were required in junior high or high school? Well, those days are long gone. Public schools stopped providing shop classes in the early 1990s, before even the music, arts and physical education cutbacks hit.

Oregon students present design proposals

High school students in the ACE Mentor Program presented their design proposals for a library, a fire station and a public park. Students received help with their projects from mentors in engineering and architecture fields.

ACE Academy graduates first class

ACE Academy, a charter school created to funnel kids into the building industry, is graduating its first class. The school's directors are evaluating the technical education experiment from which 14 of 63 graduates plan to enter apprenticeship programs.
