For $19 and $7, which is the better burger?

It’s always preferable to have great food in an equally great atmosphere (and y’all know I’m still burger questing to find that perfect mix), but such isn’t always the case here in Portland.

Take , for instance. Housed in a beautiful old building at the entrance of the 1905 World’s Fair site, the restaurant also boasts a lovely and unusually large outdoor dining area, an interesting history and original stained-glass windows. With a great looking menu and its own Skyline Farm, I had hoped that the overall dining experience would be a special one.

Fresh Grill's delicious $7 burger

But alas this is an example of the burger that could have been THE ONE 鈥 but wasn’t even close. At a whopping $19 price tag for the Grass Fed Wagyu 鈥淩oyale With Cheese,鈥 it should have been exceptional. Well, it was only OK, and at that price 鈥 not acceptable. The first flaw was that it was overcooked considerably, which of course led to drying it out and leaving it without any rich juicy flavor whatsoever. I guess my first red flag should have been the flat screen TV in the bar (on Saints game night no less) that had been broken for 鈥渁bout six months or so.鈥 Can’t or won’t fix the TV? What does that tell you? And where else are they cutting corners?

In stark contrast to Meriwether’s in every way, is in Beaverton near Washington Square. In a no-frills, no-ambience, typical fast food-type building, this place is all about very good quality fast burgers at great prices, and with a choice of waffle fries or sweet potato fries! For less than $7, I’d take this burger over Meriwether’s any day. I’ll say it again: You really can’t judge a burger by its building. Bon App茅tit!

is a quest to find Portland’s best burgers and the stories of the buildings that house them. The best burger must be gourmet and worth its weight in calories. Submit your favorite to [email protected].
