When Christine Uri finished her undergraduate degree at Evergreen State College, she wasn鈥檛 sure what would come next. She thought law school would offer something challenging and allow her to develop a skill so she could help others in meaningful ways.

鈥淭hat, combined with the fact the LSAT doesn鈥檛 have a math section,鈥� Uri said. 鈥淵ou have to play to your strengths.鈥�

An attorney with Tonkon Torp, Uri helps innovative, midsize, privately held businesses by tapping into her expertise in organizational structures, strategic relationships, risk management and transactions. She regularly plans communications with stakeholders, forms entities, develops policies, negotiates agreements and protects intellectual property. She is a member of many professional organizations, including the Oregon and Washington state bars, the American Bar Association鈥檚 Forum on Franchising, Oregon Women Lawyers and The Link for Women.

Despite a busy practice, Uri spends a great deal of her time volunteering with Girls Inc., a nonprofit group that helps young women pursue nontraditional careers, develop healthy relationships with other young women and develop their own points of view regarding the media.

鈥淲e do a lot of work shoring up subject matter discrepancies, like keeping girls interested in science, math and technology,鈥� said Uri. 鈥淚t takes a lot of pieces to get from being a middle school girl to having a professional career.鈥�

Uri also volunteers with Dress For Success, a group that provides low-income women with clothing suitable for job interviews, and is a member of the board of advisers for the Oregon Women鈥檚 History Consortium.

What was your favorite course in law school? Your least favorite?

My favorite was Property because the professor was really funny. My least favorite was International Trade 鈥� it sounded interesting in the course book, but ended up being an endless circular conversation about “like kind” products.

What do you spend your non-lawyer time doing?

Walking my basset hound on Northwest 23rd Avenue.

What is something that most people don鈥檛 know about you?

I love science fiction.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Time-travel. Anyone who watched 鈥淗eroes鈥� knows that time-travel is the superpower of superpowers.
