Hearing different sides of a story is integral to being a good attorney. Perhaps that鈥檚 why Dominic Campanella, who comes from a very large Italian family, has had such success.

鈥淚 remember sitting around the table at my grandparents鈥 house listening to their stories,鈥 said Campanella. 鈥淓veryone has an opinion and sees things differently. It helps you as an attorney to hear different sides of a story. You need to sort it out, and if you don鈥檛 get your two cents in, no one will hear it.鈥

Campanella joined Brophy, Schmor, Brophy, Paradis, Maddox & Weaver LLP immediately after graduating with Order of the Coif honors from the University of Oregon School of Law in 2004. He was an associate at the law firm for five years before being named a partner in 2010. He specializes in civil litigation, including insurance defense, commercial litigation and collections.

Prior to entering law school, Campanella spent seven years in Florida providing maritime rescue services to the Tampa Bay boating community as a boat captain and instructor for the Eckerd College Search and Rescue Team. In 2003, he helped establish the Friends of The Waterfront of Eckerd College in an effort to unite and network with former search and rescue alums. He also serves his community as treasurer of the Jackson County Bar Association, director of the Rogue River Valley University Club, member of the Rotary Club.

What was your favorite course in law school?

I was lucky to learn from many wonderful professors at Oregon Law, but my favorite class was Contracts with Prof. Jim Mooney, who taught me to think like a lawyer without taking myself too seriously.

Which song is in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks and Stone Temple Pilots would normally get a lot of play, but my son鈥檚 Sesame Street songs have somehow earned veto power.

The coast or the gorge?

I鈥檝e never been to the gorge, so I have to choose the coast. But, can I vote for a July sunset over a Southern Oregon vineyard?

If you were trapped on a desert island, you couldn鈥檛 live without your:

Fridge stocked with hard-crusted bread, my grandmother鈥檚 Mostaccioli Bolognese and my grandfather鈥檚 homemade wine.

What is the first concert you attended?

John Denver. I was 5 years old and my favorite song was Rocky Mountain High. I fell asleep before he played it.

If you hadn鈥檛 become an attorney, what career would you have pursued?

My passion in college was search & rescue. I would have committed to the United States Coast Guard. Our country is indebted to all of our first responders, and they deserve our thanks and support.

What person do you most admire?

My wife, Ashley, the most capable person I know. She defines grace and elegance under fire. As a winemaker, she consistently achieves excellence with the utmost humility. She is a patient, firm and loving mother. She teaches me every day.

What is something that most people don鈥檛 know about you?

I鈥檓 a momma鈥檚 boy. My mom, Eleonora, still lives in Chicago, and it kills me that I don鈥檛 get to spend more time with her.

What was the last book you read?

Honestly, with a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old, the only books I read these days involve magic trains and talking animals.

Do you have any tattoos?

No. I鈥檓 too much of a nonconformist to get a tattoo.

What is the best part of being an attorney/the worst?

There is nothing like the feeling you get from pouring your heart and soul into your client鈥檚 case, presenting it to a trier of fact, and earning a winning verdict. Despite all the jokes, good lawyers earn a living by seeking justice. Ours is a noble profession. The worst part of practicing law is explaining to clients the limitations of legal remedies, and then trying to convince them that we have the best legal system in the world.

What do you spend your non-lawyer time doing?

I love to cook for family and friends, explore the Oregon outdoors, play the piano, root for the Ducks, and complain about the Chicago Cubs.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

The ability to heal rapidly from any injury or disease. I鈥檓 terrified of doctors.

What was the most influential Supreme Court decision?

It may have been Gibbons v. Ogden, 22 U.S. 1 (1824). Chief Justice Marshall鈥檚 expansive reading of the Commerce Clause set up Congress鈥 broad powers to regulate, and therefore control, our country鈥檚 interstate 鈥渃ommerce.鈥

What was the most harmful supreme court decision of all time?

Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (1896), which established the 鈥渟eparate but equal鈥 doctrine.
