ZGF is perhaps best known as Portland鈥檚 largest homegrown architecture firm. Its record for innovation speaks for itself.

Locally, projects include modern mixed-use towers Eleven West and Twelve West; elsewhere, projects include an office for Google within the Spruce Goose hangar and a net-zero laboratory and office building for the J. Craig Venter Institute in Southern California.

It鈥檚 not easy to be both large and innovative, but ZGF has both resources and creativity. Look no further than the Portland International Airport main terminal expansion. The $1.5 billion project is structurally complex, requiring connection of six separate buildings that were constructed at different times and installation of a massive new roof covering 400,000 square feet. Yet ZGF鈥檚 design is hardly institutional, with emphasis on space, natural light and regionally sourced wood products.

鈥淲e wanted to build on the success of PDX,鈥� ZGF managing partner Sharron van der Meulen said. 鈥淲e weren鈥檛 there to change it or make it something it鈥檚 not.鈥�

ZGF also designed the PAE Living Building, a cutting-edge structure for Edlen & Co. in Portland鈥檚 oldest neighborhood. It鈥檚 expected to become the first fully certified Living Building in Portland 鈥� and the largest certified one to date.

ZGF has also done numerous modern office renovations for clients such as Expensify, Perkins Coie and Stoel Rives.

Urban planning is another area where ZGF excels. It was no surprise when Prosper Portland tapped the firm to plan the 32-acre Broadway Corridor redevelopment near downtown Portland.

The pandemic has only improved collaboration in ZGF鈥檚 six offices in the U.S. and Canada, and made the firm better able to marshal its resources, van der Meulen said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 made us a stronger firm,鈥� she said.
