FFA Architecture and Interiors threads the needle between designing the building for the services it provides and influencing the conversation to include sustainability and equity.

The firm鈥檚 work on the Beaverton Public Safety Center focused on diversity. For a police station, that meant looking at how to get people to visit a kind of building that historically has been really unwelcoming. The firm chose to emphasize the civic nature, designing the exterior to look more like a public building such as a library, to bridge this gap. For the Robert Libke Public Safety Building in Oregon City, the goal was to create a welcoming space, so it was carved open, giving a transparent view all the way from the courtyard to the transition chamber.

鈥淏efore we need to draw a line, we need to have a conversation,鈥 FFA partner Edward Runnings said. 鈥(It鈥檚 about) getting to the heart of what is needed and what the community is about 鈥 then generate the design.鈥

The soon-to-be-completed agricultural complex at Chemeketa Community College had a high sustainable goal; the design team was able to transcend that with a bit of practical thinking. The photovoltaic solar array system went from 47 kilowatts to 91 kilowatts with a bit of readjustment, making it a net positive building. The college鈥檚 agricultural program will no longer have to pay an energy bill.
