POWER LIST: ARCHITECTURE

Set in the cornerstone of Carleton Hart Architecture is an unmistakable urge to serve a community’s well-being through the built environment. With a defined and mission-driven focus, the firm has become a leader in the affordable housing market.
Each project may deal with a different community and a different set of needs. The firm’s approach lies in the heart of trauma-informed design, even before the phrase became prevalent. The focus recognizes that a space can have an emotional impact on people and then aims to promote safety, well-being and healing through design and material choices.
The firm’s work on the Family Village Shelter for Portland Homeless Family Solutions (PHFS) was one of the first of its kind in Oregon to address homelessness through trauma-informed design. The project’s elements included privacy, a low-contrast color palette, and visual connections to nature through day-lit spaces and wood and quartz materials.
