3. Skylab Architecture

Skylab鈥檚 often innovative approach stems from an effort to reveal the unseen by combining a story within spaces with intentional material choices. The firm鈥檚 work on the new Snow Peak USA flagship store and headquarters in Portland on Northwest 23rd Avenue tells that tale. The ground floor was carved out to sit below-grade on a slanted street. As the building progresses above the street, so does the change in materials 鈥� from dark stone and concrete to wood. The design aims to bring the outside in and the inside out for the camping store.

The firm has emphasized not being a specialist in one field or another but rather on finding all of the right ingredients to make each project unique. This happens either by careful selection of team members or materials. This acute attention to detail within a design narrative separates Skylab from many other firms.
