A shiny new stadium in Eugene recently attracted the spotlight as the home of the U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field.
The University of Oregon鈥檚 Hayward Field, completely rebuilt after the original was demolished in 2018, is now 277,000 square feet. It holds 12,500 seats, but is able to accommodate up to 25,000 temporary bleacher seats. The stadium has locker rooms, concessions, an indoor track, a barbershop, a weight room, training rooms, a physical therapy area, a kitchen, a museum, the Bowerman Sports Science Center, and more.
Including a new nine-story tower with exhibits, conference rooms, an observation deck, and a training staircase to the top of the building.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to describe in words the project 鈥 just the level of detail and attention to detail put into it,鈥 PAE associate principal Justin Stenkamp said.
PAE provided mechanical, electrical, fire protection and technology system design and engineering for the renovation.
The PAE team coordinated with the University of Oregon staff responsible for events and handling national and local broadcasting companies on the technology side. The coordination has produced one of the better-equipped stadiums for event presenters and announcers.
The fiber-optic infrastructure also includes headroom for future broadcast technologies, Wi-Fi and DAS, and there is an option to switch to a high-density, multiple antennae wireless access point system.
On the mechanical side, Stenkamp said the complexities of this project were less about the system types and more about how all of them would fit. Much of the ductwork and piping is hidden behind the walls, ceilings and the giant glulam beams.
The size, coordination and schedule were the biggest challenges, Stenkamp said. Construction started in April 2018 and finished in April 2020.
