POWER LIST: GENERAL CONTRACTORS

By size, Fortis Construction might be only in the middle of Portland鈥檚 roster of general contractors. Yet year after year the general contractor鈥檚 local billings rank high. In 2020, the company completed an $89 million modernization of Gresham High School and an $11 million expansion of the University of Oregon鈥檚 Matthew Knight Arena. In addition, the $12 million J.K Gill Building redevelopment won from the 91视频 a TopProjects award in the office major renovation/expansion category.
Fortis鈥 people are just wired to do bigger, technical projects, senior project manager Justin Cook said. Right now, the general contractor is working in Hillsboro on a 219,000-square-foot build-out to accommodate a consolidation of operations for Hitachi. The project is moving at a pace so rapid that some design is being done on the fly, Cook said.
鈥淚f you鈥檙e not nimble and able to react to the owner鈥檚 changes and how to hook up certain tools, you can be paralyzed pretty quickly,鈥 he added.
Work on the reinforced concrete facility is expected to be completed in August 2022, according to a press release from Hitachi in May.
On other market fronts, Fortis just wrapped up work on McDaniel High School (formerly Madison High School) in Northeast Portland. The school received a complete modernization and gained 170,000 square feet of new space. The general contractor also is working on a $219.6 million project to replace the University of Oregon鈥檚 Hamilton and Walton residence halls in Eugene.
