Many companies take on affordable housing projects, but LMC Construction perhaps tackles more than most others. The general contractor, since its inception in 2004, has either renovated or built more than 10,000 affordable units.

About 70 percent of LMC Construction’s work is affordable housing, company President Chris Duffin estimated. At the moment, the general contractor has 17 projects under construction and even more in planning. The time from project conception to ground being broken can take two to four years, he said, so there’s a lot of collaboration in the preconstruction phase.

A plus side to the long lead times, Duffin added, is that the firm already knows what it will be working on three years from now.

One project under construction is Las Adelitas, a four-story, 142-unit affordable housing building in Portland’s Cully neighborhood. The project is arguably the most significant redevelopment in Cully to date. The site formerly held a strip club known for human trafficking and illegal gambling. Now it’s becoming a home for families.

Over in the St. Johns neighborhood, LMC is working on a four-story development for low-income families. Cathedral Village Apartments will have 110 units as well as services available to residents. The general contractor is also putting together Rockwood 10, a new six-building, 224-unit complex in Gresham. The project’s diverse array of housing options is almost unheard of in today’s market. The complex will hold 14 four-bedroom, 89 three-bedroom, 74 two-bedroom, and 47 one-bedroom apartments.

Aside from affordable housing, LMC Construction is working on Vancouver Block 3, an eight-story mixed-use building in the changing waterfront of Vancouver, Washington.
