PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE: The four-story, 12-unit, 34,000-square-foot Ellen Browning Building is a luxury cohousing development. The vision was to create comfortable space for a group of friends to age in place.

The building, the first of its kind in the Portland-metro area, has opulent homes with contemporary interiors and a terra-cotta exterior. The European landscaping includes terraces with trellises and jasmine plantings, which serve as leafy privacy screens.

The development was built on Southeast Division Street so that its residents can enjoy an urban setting and easily walk to retail stores and restaurants nearby.

The ground floor functions as a 900-square-foot art gallery with quarterly rotating exhibits from project owner Molly McCabe鈥檚 personal collection. There are 10 single-level residences on the second and third floors ranging from 1,000 square feet to 4,000 square feet. The units feature state-of-the-art audio and video components.

In addition to two large elevators, the building has ADA-compliant features as well as end-of-life-care infrastructure such as electrical plugs for life support systems. Two one-bedroom residences on the ground floor are for house care providers.

On the fourth floor is a communal indoor and outdoor recreation space that includes a spa, pool, gym, game room, kitchen, and dining room.聽There is also a 4,000-bottle wine cellar, two retail shops, a restaurant, and an underground parking garage.

A sculpted tree chandelier hangs above the communal dining room鈥檚 table. Residents鈥 names and their grandchildren鈥檚 names are carved into the branches.
