PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE: This innovative facility (CEET) at the Oregon Institute of Technology has makerspaces, classrooms, teaching labs, applied-technology laboratories, a boardroom, and an office suite for the dean of the College of Engineering. Designed to be a catalyst for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration between students, faculty, industry and the community, the building also allows for expansion of critical college functions.

OIT sought an iconic building to serve as a new campus entry point and be visible from the main vehicular approach. A large, stepped gathering space in the heart of the building was designed to facilitate collaboration and interactions. A clear and simple organizational and structural scheme was formed for the building. Thoughtful planning of building infrastructure will allow for future changes in program needs.

The CEET reveals structures and systems customarily hidden in buildings, and accompanies those systems with infographics and text explaining operations. For example, color-coded pipe jacketing and colored lighting are matched with diagrams illustrating operations of the heating, cooling and snowmelt system loops.

Sustainable building elements include 100 percent geothermal heating, and external shading and daylighting along with natural ventilation and optimal glazing to reduce heat gain.
