PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE: Benson Polytechnic High School, which serves students throughout the Portland Public Schools district, is not a typical neighborhood high school. Founded in 1917, the school in recent decades has seen its focus shift to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) and CTE (career technical education).

To plan for modernization, a robust planning process was developed with outreach to instructors, students, alumni, community members and industry partners. Their input helped establish principles for the new design. The concept of the colocation of CTE and academic programs was a main driver of the layout.

Crews are modernizing the most historically significant portions of this landmark: the 1917 main classroom building, the 1925 gymnasium, the 1929 auditorium, and the 1917 foundry building. Also, the historic buildings’ facades 鈥 including original masonry, terra-cotta and windows 鈥 are being restored. Interior spaces are being reconfigured and updated, with a focus on life safety, accessibility, functionality, sustainability and historic significance.

At the heart of the school, a new wing will house a commons area, a student store and a digital caf茅/career center flanked by two secure courtyards. New two-story wings facing the east courtyard will provide state-of-the-art CTE spaces along with academic classrooms in an arrangement that maximizes functionality, adaptability, transparency, daylight, and outdoor access on a tight site.

A LEED gold rating is being targeted. Construction is scheduled to finish in 2024.
