PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE: The Florence Center is a Lane Community College satellite campus. It is an essential educational resource for the county’s entire western area, providing a wide variety of academic and community support offerings. The 17,426-square-foot facility was initially constructed as the 10,000-square-foot LCC Siuslaw Skills Center in 1974 and then was expanded over the years.

The renovation, partially funded through an Oregon Seismic Rehabilitation Grant and community-approved bond money, centers on addressing critical seismic, maintenance and accessibility deficiencies as well as improving spaces to support student learning. The design aims to improve the facility’s function, provide long-term flexibility, and support contemporary academic instruction. Improvements include full replacements of the original building’s electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, and upgrades of existing shear walls and the roof diaphragm. Also, architectural finishes are being replaced and classrooms’ audio-visual elements are being updated.

The site design seeks to maintain the 9-acre campus’ forested feel while creating a safer environment. Visibility is being increased by clearing overgrown plants, using low-growing native plantings, and adding site lighting while still meeting the city’s 鈥渄ark sky鈥� requirements. Additionally, low walls flanking the campus’ moat-like entry are being removed and a small entry plaza is being created outside of the entry to add a welcoming 鈥渇ront door.鈥�

Work is occurring as LCC transitions from remote learning to in-person classes. Long lead times for required equipment and the college’s desire to use buildings during the fall 2022 term presented challenges. The project has been phased to allow for safe operations while work progresses.
