PROJECT: Liberty High School solar array

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE: A photovoltaic canopy structure is being built at Liberty High School, enhancing education on sustainable technologies. Work started in fall 2022 and is expected to finish in March. The project was delayed from its original summer schedule because of an extended permit process. A significant portion of the project budget is expected to be offset by funding from the state’s Green Energy Technology program.

The 18-foot-long, 5,500-square-foot, building-integrated photovoltaic canopy will have 176 panels next to the sustainable agriculture/design building on the north side of the Liberty campus. Under the canopy, a 3,600-square-foot open gravel yard will provide space for students to fabricate educational projects.

In addition, the canopy will cover a 900-square-foot unconditioned photovoltaic equipment room. It will house the mechanical and electrical components running the canopy, allowing students to directly learn about sustainable systems and solar power generation as they manage, maintain, and analyze data from the array as part of their studies. The approximately 55 kilowatts of power generated will be fed into the electric utility system.
