PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In 2001, theatre company CoHo Productions teamed with R&H Construction to launch the CoHo Theatre in the Slabtown neighborhood of Northwest Portland. Now, R&H is returning for a second act: construction of an expansion that will enable two other companies 鈥 Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble (PETE) and Third Rail Repertory Theatre 鈥 to join CoHo in making their home on Raleigh Street.
The original CoHo Theatre space at 2257 N.W. Raleigh St. includes a 99-seat auditorium, CoHo鈥檚 offices and its Resource Center serving independent and emerging artists. The adjoining 3,500-square-foot space at 2259 N.W. Raleigh St., previously occupied by a furniture retailer, will be renovated to feature two studios for use by PETE and Third Rail. The new space will include two large rehearsal rooms, theatre storage areas and four new gender-neutral restrooms. New walls, lighting, fire alarm system, and mechanical units with distribution to serve the new rehearsal rooms are included in the scope of work. Also, floors will be refinished.
The expansion was the brainchild of Philip Cuomo, CoHo鈥檚 producing artistic director, who died in 2021. Cuomo鈥檚 family formed a foundation to realize his vision in collaboration with a consortium consisting of CoHo, PETE and Third Rail, whose managing director is Cuomo鈥檚 widow, Maureen Porter.
