PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The University of Oregon purchased the former Concordia University site in June 2022 and began relocating its Portland campus there. As part of UO’s master plan, TVA Architects designed the transformation of Luther Hall – one of the oldest campus structures – into the Innovation Building. It houses UO’s Sports Product Design, Sports Product Management, Product Design, Multimedia Journalism, Immersive Media Communication and Strategic Communication programs, as well as the Oregon Reality Lab.
The three-story building, constructed in 1949, had previously received two expansions, each with a unique structural system. One project goal was to spatially connect the structures to improve circulation, expose windowless corridors to natural light, and add visibility into the new design studios.
One of the building’s most significant features is the former chapel with its heavy timber trusses and a high ceiling. The space was transformed into a dynamic, interdisciplinary event space that supports student engagement.
With faculty offices, classrooms, and computer labs, the building supports students from all campus programs. State-of-the-art maker spaces facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration to address real-world challenges.
