PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The new DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital has opened in Portland鈥檚 Slabtown neighborhood. The nonprofit has served the metro area for more than 50 years.

DoveLewis will occupy the first two floors of the three-story, 63,520-square-foot facility; the third floor will be available for potential expansion. DoveLewis also will continue to occupy and provide services at its existing 24/7 emergency care facility across the street at 1945 N.W. Pettygrove St.

鈥淧roject Whiskers,鈥 as dubbed by the Skanska and DoveLewis teams, delivered a building with three surgery suites, a dozen exam rooms and eight specialty treatment rooms, all of which will reduce wait times and stress for pets and families. The new facility houses advanced digital X-ray equipment and a 3T MRI machine 鈥 the only one in Oregon 鈥 as well as new community gathering and teaching spaces, staff workspace, conference rooms, and break rooms. The building also features outdoor patios, a terra-cotta fa莽ade and a vegetated green roof 鈥 in a design showing paw prints 鈥 over most of the structure.

Skanska鈥檚 work included demolition of an existing structure, site excavation, shoring, and construction of the new building and a below-grade parking garage with automated car stackers. The steel-and-concrete structure has a combination of exterior metal and terra-cotta wall panels with some concrete masonry units. Construction also included public street improvements and landscaping.
