PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The three-story Dolores development will offer 67 affordable housing units in the Tanasbourne neighborhood at Hillsboro鈥檚 east end. Named for Latina agricultural activist Dolores Huerta, the building is rising on land that formerly held a hazelnut orchard. The design drew inspiration from works by Mexican architects such as Ricardo Legorreta and Luis Barrag谩n and was created with input from a residential proxy group that helped select the exterior colors and other features.

Dolores, a family-oriented building, will provide apartments with one to four bedrooms as well as an on-site playground. Households earning less than 60 percent of the area median income will be eligible. Twelve permanent supportive housing units will come with housing vouchers and wrap-around services from New Narrative. Hacienda CDC will own and manage the property with bilingual services.

The project was funded via a mix of private and public money, including $10.5 million from the Metro affordable housing bond approved by voters in 2018. The Dolores site was the first acquired through Metro鈥檚 Site Acquisition Program; sites were chosen to advance racial equity. The team received $4.5 million in land and gap funding through this program.

Sustainable features will include solar panels, a community garden and green spaces.
