Hollywood Apartments construction begins without neighborhood input

A developer has broken ground for a mixed-use building next to the Hollywood Theatre in Northeast Portland. The project team, facing concerns from local businesses and preservationists, chose to bypass what could have been a lengthy design review process and went with a different city process instead.

Contemporary live-work space for sale in Northeast Portland

A building, at 148 N.E. 80th Ave., was finished late last year by Kurt Chiapuzio, a broker and a builder who also designed it. Two similar buildings on the street were sold to a therapist and a textile designer. This one, presently being used to house an art show, has an asking price of $232,500.

A project by nonprofit Human Solutions to build a transit-oriented, affordable housing project in the Gateway area of Northeast Portland had fizzled in the past. But now it has financial backing from state and federal tax credits, private foundations and a helping of urban renewal dollars.

Alberta Main Street program undergoes first-year assessment

Representatives from the National Trust of Historic Preservation will be in Portland June 21-23. They will conduct focus groups and interviews with community stakeholders to find out how successful the Main Street Program has been the first year and how it should develop in the coming years.

Oregon Outreach building for sale

The building at 3802 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. is home to Oregon Outreach, an alternative school program for students who drop out of school or are at risk of dropping out. The nonprofit has been paying a discounted rate since 1993 and would like to continue that arrangement under the building鈥檚 new ownership. The 7,762-square-foot building is for sale for $954,900.

Mid-century architecture surveyed in East Portland

With a $12,000 grant from the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, the Portland recently commissioned a preliminary survey of approximately 500 mid-century buildings in 28 East Portland areas.
