Hawaiian-born Tom Matsuda finished his undergraduate studies at the University of Hawaii in the 1970s, a critical period in the revival of native culture. As he saw the concerns of the Polynesian people center around land rights, it became apparent that the law was the tool for solving those issues of contention.
